Twelve

I didn’t know what kids wore to parties these days, but I didn’t intend to blend in. I wanted to stand out. No skinny jeans with a high waist for me. Besides, I expected more girls wore miniskirts than skinny jeans to these sorts of things. I shut down my computer and grabbed my laptop.

Locking my studio, I headed home, drudging through that hundred-yard walk. Outside, the parking lot at the winery didn’t have an empty space, and the bed and breakfast boasted a full parking lot, too. Good thing my ex-husband’s family businesses did well. I’d never have to worry about Tommy. She’d always have a job.

I did worry about me, though. I didn’t want to work for the family again. I helped during harvest, but that’s about all I could handle. And I only did it because Hattie was too busy bossing everyone else around to harp on me constantly. I did love the vineyard and the winery. I loved the idea of the restaurant and B&B, but had no desire to go back to those businesses. Hattie’s vineyard manager loved teaching, and when I had time, I shadowed him during the slower parts of the year. That way I’d be more helpful during harvest, not asking stupid questions no one had time to answer.

When I got to the house, I called out for Tommy. No response. I looked in the yard to see her car gone. “Too early for a party,” I said out loud.

Lucy, our Bengal cat, wondered in and squeaked. She had two meow modes, squeak and cover your ears. Squeak indicated a good mood.

“It’s too early for a party, isn’t it?” I bent down and scratched Lucy between the ears. She promptly dropped to the floor and rolled over on her back. I rubbed her belly for half a second before she jumped up and dashed out of the room. “Right, you’re welcome. And thanks for answering my question.”

I considered where Tommy might have gone off to, but then settled for a glass of wine while I considered my options. Staking out the house would be my best bet. I could sit in the parking lot at the college and watch.

I walked into my bedroom, planning to change my clothes and get ready. I looked at my watch. I still had plenty of time. The adrenaline rush from my confrontation with Anita drained me. I stared longingly at my bed, listening as it called my name. Sleep would be better for me than a glass of wine. I walked back out to the kitchen and put my glass on the top shelf of the refrigerator, and nearly tripped over Lucy as I turned to go back to my room.

“Follow if you want, but get out of my way.” I stepped over her.

Pulling the pillow from under the covers, I flopped down. I could lie down for a few minutes and still have plenty of time to get to the party before everyone arrived. I lay on my back, hands behind my head and under the pillow.
